~ Sugambria sei's Panier ~
This is an etched glass stein with pewter lid and porcelain inlay. The inscription under the lid indicates the stein was given as a Christmas gift in 1904. This stein is what is known as a student association (think fraternity) stein. Most student associations show this Latin phrase, over the crest (Wappen) of the association.

This association is named Sugambria and was originally located at the university in Hannover. Sugambria is an area in Germany once inhabited by the Sicambri, aka Sugambri, who were a Celtic or Germanic people who during Roman times lived on the east bank of the Rhine river, near the border with the Netherlands. Most of the students in this association probably came from this area. The colors of the association are shown in the feathers and upper left quadrant of the crest. The date on the crest is the founding date of the association, 9/9/1882. Etched on the face of the glass hard to see, is the word Andenken (remembrance).

Note: There are many good articles on the German student associations in this site's Reading Room.
