~ Zum Namensfeste (Namenstag) ~

This stein marked with the Gebrüder Dorfner of Hirschau logo ca. 1900 was presented in honor of the recipient's naming/baptizing celebration or day. In Catholic and Orthodox countries it has been traditional to name children on the day of their baptism which might or might not be their actual birthday in honor of a Christian Saint or martyr that had died on that day of the year. For instance, Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483 and named and baptized on November 11, 1483 receiving the name of Saint Martin of Tours who had died on that day of an earlier year. The Namenstag is often celebrated in preference to the actual birthday.
