~ A Russian Silver Tankard ~
from the October 2008 TSACO Auction
This month's featured stein was the top seller in The Stein Auction Company's auction October 12 at the mini-convention in Chicago. Estimated in the auction catalog at $50,000 to $75,000, the stein sold for $103,500 (including the buyer's premium).
The stein is a Russian silver tankard, 8.2 inches high, gilded, with a very rare plique-à-jour base and lid. The stein is marked Pavel Ovchinnikov, 1893. The same stein was previously sold by Gary Kirsner Auctions in 1998. A similar example was sold in 1983 by Sotheby's, New York, and another similar stein illustrated in Russian gold and silver work by Alexander von Solodkoff was sold in 1981.
