Satan Stein
By Master Steinologist Roy De Selms
Our featured stein is a character stein of a devil (AKA Mefistopheles) marked "1565 Germany" made by Steinzeugwerke ca. 1900. (see: "Old Catalogs" on the SCI Website) The verse is a spoof on a centuries old German myth where Faust makes a pact with the devil to sell his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. In this case the pact with the devil-stein is ensuring non-stop beer. The most famous version of the story was written in the 19th century by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
The verse: Wer mit mir schliesst einen Packt, dem bleibt der Magen stets intakt. translates to: Whoever seals a pact (contract) with me, will always have his stomach full (of beer). Steins like this were used a hundred years ago for Halloween trick or treating and would have been filled up with a good German Beer treat, but if you tried it today, it would likely get you a Bud Lite trick.
