Featured Stein:
September 2012
When I first saw it in the antique shop I knew I would have to buy it. Clearly it had been made around the beginning of the 1900s,
with deep relief, well painted full-color and with a 3-liter capacity mark. I know what they say, but sometimes size does matter.
The inscription on the stein is a saying that I have always smilingly enjoyed: Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib, Gesang, Who does not love wine, women and song, der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang. Remains a fool his whole life long. Unfortunately, in this case the appropriate follow-up verse, "Yet who doesn’t love a good glass of beer is much dumber, it seems to me", is missing from this stein, but I still had to have it. I knew the manufacturer’s mark was not on any of my other steins, but I remembered seeing it somewhere. As soon as I was home I looked in my faithful reference bible, and there it was. I determined that the manufacturer was Paulus & Thewalt. On the next morning—the very next morning—I opened SteinTalk as usual, and discovered a discussion about “TP” marked steins! I had noticed the article on "TP" steins in the Reading Room, but had never read it. It hadn’t applied to me, until now. After carefully reading “The Elusive ‘TP’ Mark”, I discovered that the actual manufacturer of this beautiful stein was Johann Peter Thewalt. |
