An American Thoroughbred
by Thoroughbred Stein Verein
This month we
feature the 2007 SCI Convention stein, a porcelain
character stein of a thoroughbred horse sitting atop a keg of beer,
wearing his
lederhosen, with foaming stein in one hand and radish in the other. The
stein bears striking resemblance to the logo of the Thoroughbred Stein
Verein,
hosts of this years SCI convention in Louisville, KY. What better
choice for the great horse-racing state of Kentucky?
Convention-goers will each receive one of these limited edition steins,
which contains a special treat in its base - a colored lithophane of
Affirmed, the 1978 Triple Crown winner, the last horse to sweep the
ultimate prize of American thoroughbred horse racing. Affirmed was
named Horse of
the Year in 1978, as a three-year old, and again in 1979. While
Affirmed came away with the honors, his greatness was tested every inch
of the way by
another great horse, Alydar, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby,
the Preakness and the Belmont.
This stablemate of Affirmed and Alydar strikes a much more relaxed pose
than either of those two racing greats ever did, but it's a most
appropriate one for the slogan of this years convention - "Come Horse Around With Us!"
