A Beautiful Bohemian Enameled Glass Stein
By Fred Behlers
The photo and reported purchase of this
stein first appeared in the September 1971 issue of Prosit.
This unusually beautiful glass stein was found in a little antique shop near the Opera House in Vienna in 1960. SCI member Fred Behlers of Connecticut turned it down on first inspection. "Gert (his wife) and I waked out of the shop without taking it," reports Mr. Behlers. After we had walked about two blocks, we looked at each other and without saying a word, we dashed back breathlessly and bought it!"
It
is a half-liter Austrian or Bavarian crystal with ruby overlay and
hand-painted floral design. The inlay glass lid looks like a church
rose window.
