An Unusual Johann Maresch Stein

By Ken Stroud

This stein was made at the Bohemian works of Johann Maresch. It is finished in a Majolica glaze which is very unusual for the company, as most of their production was in a drab ironware. Also unusual about this stein is the application of a pewter lid, most likely done post production by a outside pewterer. It is marked with the typical JM and a small 2 and large 9 (29). It shows the face of a renaissance man with a cross on a chain around his neck. There is no capacity mark but I estimate it to be 3/10L as is smaller than 1/2L.

It is unusual for these steins to be multi-colored and it is very likely that the lid was not done inhouse but aftermarket.
